What is NASA?
America's Window to the Universe
Founded on July 29, 1958, by President Dwight D. Eisenhower, NASA — the National Aeronautics and Space Administration — is the United States government agency responsible for the nation's civilian space program and for aeronautics and aerospace research.
Over the decades, NASA has delivered some of humanity's most defining moments: the Apollo 11 Moon landing in 1969, the first reusable Space Shuttle fleet, the Hubble Space Telescope's breathtaking views of deep space, and the awe-inspiring James Webb Space Telescope — the most powerful observatory ever launched.
NASA's mission extends far beyond exploration. The agency studies our own planet through Earth-observing satellites, advances aviation technology, develops life-saving materials and medical breakthroughs, and inspires generations of future explorers. Every mission, every launch, every discovery is a reminder of what humanity can achieve when it chooses to dream big.
The Artemis Program
Back to the Moon. Forward to Mars.
Named after the twin sister of Apollo in Greek mythology, the Artemis Program is NASA's ambitious mission to return humans to the Moon — and this time, to stay. The program will land the first woman and first person of color on the lunar surface.
Artemis I
The first integrated test of the Space Launch System and the Orion spacecraft. Flew over 1.4 million miles, looping around the Moon and returning safely to Earth.
Artemis II
First crewed Artemis mission. Four astronauts will fly aboard Orion on a free-return trajectory around the Moon, venturing farther from Earth than any human since Apollo 17.
Artemis III
Because attempting a direct lunar landing presented too many untested risks, Artemis3 will instead act like the Apollo 9 mission. Astronauts will remain in Earth's orbit to practice rendezvous and docking procedures with commercial lunar landers.
Artemis IV
Artemis 4 is now the flagship mission tasked with officially returning humans to the lunar surface. It will be the first crewed Moon landing since Apollo 17 in 1972.
Carried out using the Space Launch System (SLS) — NASA's most powerful rocket ever built — and the Orion spacecraft.
